Many goat ranchers are becoming more familiar with the Savanna Goat breed, but still a lot of history behind this breed.
'The white Savanna goat breed was developed from indigenous goats of Southern Africa . In 1957, Cilliers and Sons along the Vaal river became the best known of the originators of this meat goat breed. On the rugged harsh bush country where temperatures and rainfall can vary to a marked extent, natural selection played a big role in the development of these fertile easy care, heat and drought resistant animals. These goats have thick pliable skins with short white hair. The Savanna has excellent reproduction, muscular development, good bone and strong legs and hooves. The original Savanna importers in the United States maintained the natural selection development and continued the hardy meat goat breed.'
We have found that here at Dry Creek Ranch our African Savanna goats have excellent mothering abilities and are such a majestic animal. Their short, white hair develops a fluffy cashmere coat for additional warmth during the winter, which makes them even more tolerant to the colder winters! We crossed our Savanna's with our Boer's and again found a breed that could put on the meat weight that commercial breeders are looking for and also reduced the need for parasite control in goats. We have used them for commercial meat production, but will continue the fullblood lines because the African Savanna is a one of a kind breed.
